Lomond System News – 05.07.2015

July 5th, 2015

River Leven.

As we all know, July can be a frustrating month. Low water is usually the norm and with the spring and early summer runs having passed through, the arrival of grilse is awaited. However, this season the unseasonal weather has ensured good conditions on the river. On Friday the flow was reduced to weekend level but with recent heavy thunderstorms and more rain forecast, we should see the gates open again on Monday…..hopefully.

Still some good fish being landed throughout the length of the river and it seems that there are grilse are already in the system, several having been caught and numerous seen in the lower reaches. Let’s hope that the summer run matches the spring run…

John Law 20.06.2015

20th June, John Law (12lbs) from the Renton area on a flying-c.

Other catches include: 20th June, John Donnelly (6lbs) Sandy Hole on the fly – returned. Andy McElwee (6lbs) Sandy Hole on the worm – returned. 22nd of June, Alex Hartley (17lbs) the Two Lades on the worm. 25th June, Andy McPherson (12lbs) The Double Pipes on a flying-c. 27th June, Paul McNeil (4lbs) at the Piles on the fly – returned. Alex Hartley (14lbs) The Two Lades on the worm.   30th June, Jim McFarlane (8lbs) Top Pool on a flying-c. Jim McDonald (12lbs) Flowers on a flying-c, returned.

Spoof

The month of July opened on a high for this unidentified angler. He hasn’t touched a salmon this season but last week was seen after a lengthy fight landing what we expect to be a new British record mackerel from the Street Run on the fly….well done!!

Loch Lomond.

The Loch seems to have quietened down following the spell of activity. The main spring and early summer runs have dispersed and as we wait for news of grilse it seems that many loch boatmen are taking a break. During the week there were very few anglers out, with one regular commenting that in two days he only passed three boats.

Conditions out there have been very changeable, ranging from very warm and flat calm to monsoon with high winds. The midges are taking full advantage of the humidity making it uncomfortable to lie out overnight and clegs have made their annual appearance.

Very little happening beyond Rowardennan, which has been the case for several years. Perhaps the LLFT can provide some answers about the decline of the ‘Tap End’s’ fish stocks.

Alan Stirling 18.06.15

18th of June, Alan Stirling lands his first salmon (14.5lbs) off the Loch.

Stevie Blackwood 02.07.2015

23rd June, First fish off the Loch for Stevie Blackwood and skipper and skipper Terry Cameron…

‘ Had made an early start and with no joy in the morning then decided after lunch to make for the top end of the loch.  On the banks at  Inversnaid  the inside rod went and Stevie was into a good fish. After playing it for ten minutes it was brought on board for a quick picture with skipper Terry Cameron and then it was released. About 16 – 18 pounds’

001

On the same date  Dick Dickson landed this nice salmon (13lbs) off Carraig Rock. His boat pal Jimmy, normally a pike angler who had never held a salmon before, was most impressed.

Other catches include: 23 June, Mark Lees (18lbs). 29 June, Hugh Russell (11lbs) off the Fruin Mouth. 2nd July, Stevie Blackwood, (12lbs) Sallochy- released.

Reminder to Members and Ticket Holders.

We would like to remind members and ticket holders that they should be in possession of their permits at all times when fishing on the Lomond system. This is their ‘written pemission’ to fish for migratory fish and must be produced on request to water bailiffs or police officers. Police Scotland Wildlife Crime officers are actively involved in operations on the system, so even though you think that the bailiffs may ‘know you’ these officers won’t.

The bailiffs have been active on the Loch checking boats and permits. They are able to access the membership database while on patrol and identify boats and permit holders. Members should have declared their boat registration numbers on the membership annual renewal form and by now updated photographs. If you haven’t already done so and in order to ensure minimal disruption to your day out on the Loch, please forward these details at your earliest opportunity:  bailiffing@lochlomondangling.com

Lomond System News – 21.06.2015

June 21st, 2015

River Leven.

The river level has remained fairly constant over the past fortnight but without significant rainfall the Loch level has dropped. The barrage was  raised partially on Thursday, still allowing good fishing conditions, but we can expect summer low conditions very soon.

However the best run for years has continued…..

Stuart McMillan 09.06.15

9th June, Stuart McMillan (12lbs) Stuckie Bridge on a flying-c.

Harry Jackson 15.06.15

15th June, Harry Jackson (9.5lbs) Top Pool on a flying-c.

Alex Allan 16.06.15

Alex Allan reports:

‘landed my 2nd fish of the season this morning (16/6/15). A new PB at 17.5lbs on a Cherry Devon from the tail of The Top pool. First fish was around the 10lbs mark on a flying c at the Hole in the Wall. (3/6/15).’

Other catches include: 10th June, Jim McDonald (14lbs) at the Piles on a flying-c. -returned. 17th June, Jimmy Grainger (10lbs) Top Pool on a flying-c. Brian Sutherland (12lbs) Sandy Hole on the worm. 18th June, Peter Ingram (10lbs) Piles on the fly – returned. Stevie Banks (7lbs) Factory Wall on the fly – returned. 19th June, Chic McLean (9lbs) Ritchies Lade on the fly.

Lost Fly Box Found.

In our last report we mentioned that Ancell Swan had lost a fly box on the river. We are happy to report that this box was found by one of our members and handed to the bailiffs. Ancell will be a very happy chappie.

Loch Lomond.

Loch boatmen still having good sport with most fish being caught south of the Ross Isles. There are signs of fresh fish running fast up to the deeper colder water.

john Bell 17.06.15

17th of June, John Bell decided to head up to the ‘Tap End’  and brave the midges and clegs for a few days. That evening about 8.30pm he landed his first salmon of the season (13lbs) from the Loch above Ptarmigan.

John Bell 17.06.15 (2)

The fish was very fresh, as can be seen from the short and long tailed lice still attached.

Other reports: 10th June, Charlie Young (10lbs) – day ticket angler out of Balmaha. 12th June, Alan Brunstrom (10lbs). Russell Boyd (10lbs) returned. 17th June, Willie Casey (15lbs). Eric Donnachie (9lbs) Peter Lyons (10lbs). 18th June, Euan McGrandle ( 17lbs) Sallochy – returned.

Balmaha fly fishers are having good sport with sea trout in the 3-5lbs class, mainly on the usual drifts around the islands. On 17th June Davy Sunman landed and returned the biggest sea trout this season so far with a 10lb cracker at the Long Point of Inchmoan.

Farmed Salmon Escape.

On 2nd June approximately 16,00o salmon, all in the 10lb class,  escaped from the Marine Harvest fish farm at Carradale. Marine Harvest state that these fish are immature and will head out to sea…. apparently it took them two weeks to report this escape to the Scottish Government, so who knows where they are now.

It is possible that some of these fish may turn up in the Lomond system, though there have been so signs yet. Many members have been asking what to do with one should they catch it. These fish will no doubt show the classic ‘farm fish’ signs of ragged fins, flank damage and look generally ‘different’.

The current committee guidance is as follows : Tag it as normal. Whether wild or farmed it’s a salmon and must be tagged. Take scale samples, photographs and if possible retain/freeze the adipose fin. Photos and specimens should be forwarded to the bailiffs, committee members or Loch Lomond Fisheries Trust  members. If there is no doubt that the fish was indeed a ‘farmer’ another tag will be issued.

Lomond System News – 07.06.2015

June 7th, 2015

River Leven.

After our last report it was expected that the the weather would change, gates close and the system descend into the same period of drought we have experienced over the past few years. Not so! The completely unseasonal weather recently has brought about what can only be described as a ‘spring sport bonanza’ for our members and ticket holders. Some have described it as the best fishing on the system for years. Most catches have been made at the top end of the river with Stuckie Bridge, Double Pipes, Top Pool and of course the Bonhill Bridge Pool all featuring. Our bailiff team reckon that at least eighty fish have been landed on the Lomond system during the last three weeks. Many of which, thankfully, have been returned. These spring salmon have been in excellent condition with the majority weighing into double figures.

Stuart Brown 18.05.2015

!8th May, Stuart Brown (above) with his first salmon of the year (9lbs) at the Chapel Hole on the worm. Brian Sutherland (13lbs) at Managers also on the worm.

Derek Hughes 19.05.2015

19th May, Derek Hughes successfully lands his fourth springer of the season (17lbs) on the fly at the Bonhill Pool and what a beauty! It was carefully returned to the river. Four spring fish, all released. Derek you’re a true sportsman!

Andy McPherson 20.05.2015

20th May, Andy McPherson (10lbs) at the Stuckie Bridge (above) on a flying-c. On the same date, Andy Patrick (14lbs) at Bonhill Pool on the fly.

Frank McGeachie 21.05.2015

21st May, Frank McGeachie (14lbs) at the Double Pipes (above) and Alex McElwee (12lbs) at Stuckie Bridge.

Jim Muir 22.05.2015

22nd May, Jim Muir (above) and Keith Adams were out fishing together at the Street Run when they simultaneously hooked fish. Both  fourteen pound salmon were landed and returned. Good effort guys!

John Smith 22.05.2015 (2)

Also on 22nd May, John Smith (10lbs)at the Double Pipes on a flying-c.

Stuart Madden 22.05.2015

and Stuart Madden (15lbs) at the Top Pool on the worm.

25.05.2015 Jim McDonald

25th May, Jim McDonald (10lbs) at the Chestnut Tree on a black flying-c.

Jim Minnes 25.05.2015

25th May, at the tender age of 68, Jim Minnes lands his first salmon ever (13.5lbs) at the Stuckie Bridge. Same date, W. McFetteridge (10lbs) at the Piles.

James Canning 26.05.2015

26th May, James Cannon (14lbs) at the Top Pool on the worm.

27th May, J. McFarlane (16lbs) Top Pool. John Smith (9lbs) Top Pool. Steven Gilfeather (12lbs)&(6lbs) also at Top Pool, smaller fish returned. 28th May, Chic McLean (10lbs) Managers, returned.

Stevie Blackwood 29.05.2015

29th May, Stevie Blackwood (13lbs) on the fly at the Bonhill Pool. Stevie had only been on the water for ten minutes when he hooked into the fish. It appeared to be just in off the tide and after a great fight returned to the river.

John McGinlay 30.05.2015

30th May, John McGinley (13lbs) The Craft Stream on a flying-c.

John Donnelly 30.05.2015

On the same date, John Donnelly (12lbs) on the fly at the Double Pipes. This fish had sustained considerable seal damage.

The month of May closed on a high note which continued into June.

Harry Jackson 01.06.2015

1st June, Harry Jackson (10lbs) at the double Pipes on a flying-c.

Jim McDonald 01.06.2015

Jim McDonald (12lbs) at the Stuckie Bridge on a flying-c.

Stuart Campbell 01.06.2015

and on the same date, Stuart Campbell (12lbs) at the Factory Wall on the fly. After a quick photo this fish was returned.

Andy Casey 03.06.2015

3rd June, Andy Casey (13lbs) Double Pipes on a flying-c.

Angus Soutter 04.06.2015

4th June, Angus Soutter (12lbs) below Polaroid Bridge on the fly. Returned after a quick photo.

also, Andy McElwee (14lbs) at the Top Pool on the worm. Paul Fieldman (11lbs) at the Stuckie Bridge.

Kirk Philips 05.06.2015

5th June, the most recent report, Kirk Philips (13lbs) at Dalquhurn Lade on the worm.

How long will this run last? With drier conditions forecast for the coming week the Loch level will fall quickly but there’s probably enough water (8.22 metres) to give a flow till the weekend. So it’s looking good for at least another week of  sport.

Lost Fly Box – Ancell Swan reports that on 27th May, while fishing at the left hand riverbank downstream of the church at the Glebe, he lost a black plastic box containing flies. Would any finder please contact us or return it to Ancell.

Loch Lomond.

With good runs of fish on the Leven it’s always expected that many will make it to the relatively safe sanctuary of the Loch. This has certainly been the case with boatmen enjoying good sport, some landing two fish on the same day.

Gerd Elsweiler 20.05.2015

20th May, Gerd Elsweiler (10lbs) lands his first fish of the season in Manse Bay on a black/gold rapala.

Bob Forshaw 25.5.2015

25th May, Bob Forshaw (10lbs) also from Manse Bay on a rapala. Bob tells us that he landed two pike, both 20lb+ from the same area.

Rab Strachan 25.05.2015

Also on 25th May, Loch regular Rab Strachan (12lbs) landed his second fish of the year at the same place as his first, the Boy Scout Camp Hole.

Rab Strachan 25.05.2015 (2)

The Boturich shoreline always holds fish, but isn’t the easiest area to fish. Seasoned boatmen like Rab know their way about down there, but it’s not a part of the loch for the feint of heart with many large boulders lurking under the surface and sudden shallows to navigate round. No substitute for experience!

Other catches include: 16th May, Russell Boyd (10lbs)(12lbs – returned) both Manse Bay. 21st May, Scott Pryce (13lbs). Denis McLaughlin (9lbs) Black Rocks & (12lbs) Millarochy Bay – returned. Peter Lyons (13lbs) Strathcashel Point – returned. 27th May, Euan McGrandle (9lbs) Claddich – returned.

Robert Russell contacted us to report a red letter day on 29th May ……

P1000473(1)

‘Hi, thought you might be interested in a trip I had out alone on
the Loch on Friday 29th May. Was the usual cold, blustery day with
the odd sunny spell, so furry winter hat and survival jacket was the
order of the day yet again !

Was just off the pumping station when the Toby on the poker went
and after a hard battle I landed a cock salmon of 17lb 12oz (35″ from
nose to fork in tail ) which I was delighted with as it was a personal
best (by 2lbs ) salmon from the Lomond system in 30 odd years of
fishing it. I was determined to return the fish and even strapped a cheap
phone style video camera ( not quite a go-pro lol. ) to my head to
hopefully film it returning to the depths. Sadly, despite all my efforts
over 15 mins., which I captured on the video, the fish would not recover
and had to be retained.’

P1000470

‘Didn`t have to wait another 30 years though to better it as
3 hours later off Strathcashel I got another take on a toby again and
this one was another cock fish which I weighed in the net ( with all
necessary adjustments for the wet net weight) at 20lbs. This time
and I must admit with great difficulty on a stormy loch, over deep
water,I managed to release this large fish successfully. The picture
doesn`t really do it justice as the net looks large at the top as it is
standing vertically towards the camera but the bottom arm which
the fish is lying over is 24″ wide which gives a better idea of the
length of the fish.’

Well done Robert….! If only we could all have days like that!!

The latest news we have is of Scott Pryce returning to Balloch on 5th June with two (10lbs+) fish aboard.

To date there have been no reports of fish caught beyond the Ross Isles, but it won’t be long before the main run disperses. Interesting to hear that Manse Bay was producing. This certainly used to be a good early season mark and along with Carraig Rock and Strathcashel always held fish. Doesn’t seem to be much happening on the Endrick Bank, but with the recent windy conditions it’ll be well churned up. Should be worthy of attention once it clears.

River Endrick.

No news from the Endrick yet, but we expect some early run fish to appear shortly. The bailiffs are giving the river extra attention and will report back on any sightings.

Comment.

Overall it’s been a good few weeks of sport and great to see so many quality spring fish in the system. What is really heartening is the fact many anglers are returning fish to the system. As we well know, the very existence of spring fish is under threat and we can expect further conservation measures from the Scottish Government.

If we can at least demonstrate that we don’t kill every fish and return a high percentage, it may make the difference between measures being enforced and our freedom of choice. To hear that some anglers are releasing every fish is tremendous news. Boat anglers have also been returning spring salmon, which a few years ago was unheard of. Some river anglers ask ‘Why should we release fish back to the river only for the boatmen to chap them?’ A good point. So this is great progress.

There will probably always be those who dispatch every fish they catch almost before it’s landed. Whether this is just reflex action or a throwback to the ‘hunter- gatherer age’ is debatable. However, we did learn recently of an angler on our system who killed three spring fish, all over the 10lb mark, all in one day. Although members have five tags issued and the ‘choice’ of whether and when to use them, we must ask ourselves ‘Is this type of behavior acceptable?’ Particularly when our sport is under threat and in danger of further government regulation. Isn’t it time that we ensured that this kind of ‘slaughter’ won’t happen again?

On a lighter note, we hear that Crazy Charlie is having a ‘boner’ of a time in Cuba with double figure catches of bone fish between 3-7lbs. We hope to hear more soon….

River Leven Clean Up.

Due to high water, the clean up will not take place next weekend (23/24 May) It has been put on hold until 30/31 May or 6/7 June. We”ll keep you posted.  The water’s got to drop sometime…..in the meantime enjoy the sport!

Loch Lomond.

011

Still very cold out on the Loch. It’s Mid May already but with a biting south easterly wind and the air temperature at 9C, particularly if you’re out on the Endrick Bank, it’s advisable to wrap up. Spring fish have been in the Loch for a few weeks now and with the main run navigating the Leven, things will get busier for the Loch boatmen.

20150509_194219

Rab Strachan reports on his first fish of the season:

‘Hi, sailed up the loch at 12 o clock Saturday 9th May (late start for me ). There was not much of a wind but a promise of stronger winds later. I trolled the usually bits up the east side to the Black Rocks, the Bank, and Claddich, not a touch and no boats with a fish. Did hear one was lost on the bank in the morning . The wind did get up a bit for the sail home. Time to head back to Balloch.  At the ‘Boy Scouts Hole’ the inside rod sprang into action and after a great fight landed this 14lber on a red sprat. Cheers.’

Thanks for that Rab.

Other catches include: 4th May, Peter Lyons (10lb) Cashel. 7th May Alastair Mair (11lb) Endrick Bank. Euan McGrandle (10lb) Endrick Bank.

Lomond System News – 06.05.2015

May 6th, 2015

River Leven
More water but for how long?

The gates on the River Leven were dropped on Thursday 30 April after a heavy period of rain and at this time the water is running at around 1.2m. With heavy rain forecast there is every chance that the Leven will be running high for all week. There is therefore every chance that there will be more fish off the river.
In the last period of high water a number of seal marked fish were recorded from both the river and the loch (see Lomond report below). One of the worst examples of attempted predation was seen on the 10.25 Lb fish caught on the fly (Posh Tosh) by Paul McNeil on 17 April at the Factory Wall. The ripped gill cover had nothing to do with where the fish was hooked but was a result of scarring from a recent attack by a seal. It is a wonder that the fish survived long enough to make it up river given the site of the injury and the amount of blood that it was losing when captured.

20150417_133446
20150417_133359

While the water was low a number of fresh sea trout of between 1– 2Lb were being encountered by anglers as well as some larger sea trout kelts heading in the opposite direction. Given that there are still kelts around ,even in May, is another reason why we insist on the use of circle hooks which almost invariably lead to the fish being securely hooked in the scissors
If anyone thought that you can only catch sea trout in low water conditions in the spring well think again. Leven regular John Paul Donnelly was fishing a small copper tube on 7Lb line at the double pipes in mid week low conditions when he hooked a larger than expected fish. Sometime later he landed a fresh 15 Lb salmon which after a bit of TLC was successfully returned.

IMG_0773

Other catches include this 11lb spring salmonon caught on 14th April Andy Casey taken a copper salmo at the Factory Wall. It also shows the scars of a recent seal attack.

IMG_0446

On 17th April Chic McLean landed his first salmon of the season at Managers on a flying-c. We all know it won’t be his last….

River Leven Clean Up.

Please note that the Leven clean up is due to take place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of May. The meeting point will be Bonhill Bridge at 10 am on both days and in a change to the usual format we will be working up river this year from Renton to Balloch. All members and non members are welcome and refreshments as always will be provided.

Circle Hooks.

Finally, just a reminder that bait fishing is now permitted on the Leven, but as per our bye-law,only when the bait is used in conjunction with circle hooks. Please note this measure will be strictly enforced and anglers found not using circle hooks will be asked to leave the water and the matter reported to the committee.

River Endrick
Silver on the Endrick

We weren’t even into May when the first sea trout of the year were recorded from the Endrick, Chris Turner and Colin Fergusson landed a few fresh fish at Barn’s Ford at the end of last week after a lift in water. It just goes to show that you can never be too early on this river.
Continuing with the good work around the Barn’s Ford area member Crawford Thomson has built a few benches and constructed a small bridge to improve the fishing experience for members. Thanks Crawford.

Estuary
Don’t forget your gloves!

While there is always a chance to find a bit of cover on the Leven the same cannot be said of the Estuary where there is no escaping the elements.Over the last month when the conditions have been benign then fishing has been good. On the 21st of April Ian Morrison had 4 good sea trout up to 2.5 Lb within a 20 minute spell and went on to hook a number more. However, when the weather turned markedly cooler so did the fishing with only a few brave souls venturing out in conditions more reminiscent of early March than early May. With some warmer weather on the cards next week it is hoped that things may pick up again on the estuary.

Loch Lomond
The fish are here!

After the first fish were caught in April the question was how many fish had made it into the Loch before the gates were raised on the Leven and were they present in sufficient numbers to give the Loch anglers some consistent sport. I am happy to report that there are reasonable numbers of fish out there with some fresh fish being netted.
Euan McGrandle opened his account on the Loch on 25 April when he caught a fine fresh 9Lb salmon on the golden sprat. Like several fish taken in mid April this one was also seal marked. On the same day Euan also caught a 7Lb sea trout again on the trolled sprat. Both Bob Forshaw and John Bell also lost nice fish, John dropped his when fishing the Endrick Bank and John lost his off Claddich.
On Friday 1 May things took off. We know of at least 2 fish that were caught on the Loch and rumours of a further two being landed have still to be confirmed. Those we know of we know were taken by Scott Sinclair (below) and Lenny Grant with both fish weighing about 10Lb.

074

We have not heard of any further fish being caught on the Loch but with an increasing number of seasoned regulars heading out from Balmaha and Balloch it won’t be long until more fish are encountered, particularly given the extra water now flowing down the Leven.

We would like to remind members that fishing in Camstradden Bay, particularly in front of the House, is prohibited under the terms of our lease from Luss Estates. We ask members to respect this arrangement.

Discounted Fishing For LLAIA Members

Members should note that from 1 May 2015 they will be eligible for a 10% discounted rate at Carron Valley Fishery for a mid-week session (Monday – Friday).

Carron Valley fishery is located at the top of the Endrick catchment about 5 miles east of Fintry. It is stocked with rainbows as well as holding an impressive head of wild browns and powan. Fishing is from the bank or from boat. The Committee are delighted to highlight this water and would ask that members show their membership cards when claiming the discounted rate.

****PLEASE NOTE**** LEVEN WORK PARTY 9TH /10TH MAY NOW CANCELLED DUE TO HIGH WATER.***** POSSIBLE NEW DATES 23TH/24TH MAY *****

River Leven
Quality salmon continue to come off the Leven

After the first fish was caught in mid March we didn’t have to wait long for the next few fish. On Saturday 4 April Robert Haining connected with the heaviest salmon to come off the Lomond system so far this year when he tempted a fresh run 20lb fish while fishing a floating yellow belly devon at the Stuckie Bridge.

On Easter Monday, 6 April, Derek Hughes caught a cracking fresh salmon with long tailed lice estimated to have weighted between 17 and 18lb while fishing the fly at the Piles. The fish was duly returned to do its thing for the system after a quick photograph – congratulations and well done Derek:

Despite the quality of fish that are around angling pressure is still reasonably light. Some of those who have ventured forth have began to encounter fresh run sea trout with several fish being taken up to the 3lb mark.

The medium range weather forecast from the middle of this week for the next 7 days or so is for dry conditions and although the river is still at a good height there is every chance that the gates will be raised sometime next week for the first time this year. Last year when the gates were raised our bailiffs and others were on hand to witness a stranding of newly hatched fish due to the river level having been dropped too quickly. We will be watching carefully this year and will be on hand to record what happens when the gates are finally raised. If you are around when the water drops and come across signs of stranded fish please take a photographic record and ensure that this is passed on to the Committee.

River Endrick
Wilson’s cleared and the Black Lynn retained

As some of you might be aware the Black Lynn fishings were sold as part of a larger lot last year. It is with real pleasure that the Committee are able to confirm that we have retained the fishings on this popular section of water which stretch from the Balfron Bridge to the LLAIA owned Wilson’s stretch.

On Sunday 22 March the first smolt trap was installed on the River Endrick and not content with that the willing volunteers headed to our annual spring clean on the Endrick. In all 18 people, members and non-members alike, tackled a variety of stretches from Fintry downstream to the Honeyholm Bridge. Later on that day our volunteers attended the Wilson’s stretch and after a lot of hard graft have ensured that members now have unrestricted access to the top half of the beat.

Trap going in

On behalf of the Committee we would just like to offer a big thank you to all who helped out on what was an extremely busy day.

Estuary
Fish and checks

The importance of the Estuary to the health of our system cannot be underestimated and this year has seen a lot more bailiffing activity along the shore. It is encouraging to note that with one exception every angler who has been approached of late has had written permission to fish. We will continue to keep a close eye on this fishery particularly now that sea trout catches are beginning to pick up.

Loch Lomond
Springers and others off the Loch

With fish being landed on the Leven it was only a matter of time before the early Loch anglers began to connect. The first fish caught on the Loch that we know off was landed on 6 April by Jack O’Mailey, while fishing off Aldochly. It weighed about 12lb and was safely returned. We believe a further 2 fish have since been caught but details are as yet a bit sketchy and we will update in due course. Fresh sea trout are also being caught on the troll the best we have heard of was a sea liced 6lb fish caught by Rab Strachan with Scott Sinclair also returning a nice trout of about 3 to 4lb.

20150328_144238

As we all know the Loch is not just about game fish there are specimen coarse fish out there as well, in particular pike. As we approach the spawning period some big pike are regularly recorded as a by catch of anglers fishing for salmon with Paul Dorrian reporting a really impressive 25lb fish recently. But what about the specialist pike angler fishing dead baits well the odd unexpected fish can turn up. No more so than the one caught by Jim Laughlin at Cameron House Marina in late March as this photo will testify:

SalmonCatch.032015 004

The fish which was safely returned was estimated to weight between 10 and 12lb and Carolyn Bryce the Loch Lomond Fisheries Trust biologist has confirmed that it is a sea trout. Interestingly this is not the first recorded migratory fish taken on dead bait. We can confirm that a number of escaped farmed salmon were taken on dead baits on the Loch about 10 years ago and a grilse was taken about 5 years ago by a member fishing for pike with such a bait in the lower Endrick. Thanks for the report and the photo Jim it will take a bit of beating in the unusual fish category!

Lomond System News – 20.03.2015

March 20th, 2015

River Leven
Running silver on the Leven

After what was a relatively quiet start to the season the first fish off the Lomond system in 2015 has been caught on the Leven by Danny Docherty. Danny caught the fish, a 12lb silver beauty, in the Bonhill Pool. After a quick picture by James our bailiff the fish was successfully returned and off on its journey.

And the fly………

20150319_133912

For the fourth year running the Leven has produced the first fish of the year and as always at this time of the season these fish are delight to catch. Interestingly the last opening fish caught in March (in 2013) was also caught on the fly.
There is every chance that with the high water conditions that we have experienced over the last few months there will be more fresh fish out there. I suspect that this weekend with milder weather conditions could be busier than last weekend when only a few anglers were out.

River Endrick
A new car park and a chance to work out

Although it is probably too early as yet to consider giving the Endrick a try (although you may know different) work has been ongoing to prepare for the new season. A new car park has been constructed at Barn’s Ford, a popular early season cast, which will provide parking for 3 cars as well as allowing space for vehicles to turn. This will be a welcome benefit to Endrick anglers and just in case it is all too much for you we are also in the process of sitting a bench on the far side of the footbridge.

20150319_095919_resized

This Sunday (22 March) we will be holding our annual spring clean on the Endrick and will be tackling stretches from Fintry downstream to Coolies. If you have spent a bit too much time on the couch over the winter this is a great chance to get out and do your bit for the club. We are meeting at Killearn Village Hall at 10 am on Sunday, tools, food and refreshments will be provided.

River Fruin
Shortback and sides on the Fruin

Last Saturday the Fruin had its first makeover of the year with work undertaken on 2 separate sections. At Inverlauren yet another pool has been opened up for anglers along with 3 fishy looking runs. Lower down at the Horseshoe some much needed bank protection work was undertaken with the establishment of cut willow defences which should prevent further erosion at vulnerable points.

Loch Lomond
Early days but the fish are coming!

With the first fish off the Leven there is every chance that there might be a few more anglers setting out from Balloch and Balmaha on Saturday with a view to intercepting an early springer. Even if the fish are playing hard to get the early spring scenery is a joy to behold and with the temperatures on the up it might even be a pleasant experience out there!

It is always good to get the first fish off the system and a March fish always gives a boost. On behalf of the Committee I would just like to wish everyone tight lines in the weeks and months to come.

Obituary.

November 19th, 2014

Charlie Anderson.

Charlie4

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Charlie Anderson on Thursday 6th November.

Charlie was a member of the LLAIA for many years, with his boat moored mainly at Balmaha.

In his early years he was always a keen angler and became a member of the Queen Elizabeth Angling Club in the sixties becoming secretary of that club for many years. He made a number of life-long friends in that club including our very own Matt Stewart.

He was also President of the Burns Club and his Burns recitals were legendary.

Charlie also spent some time in the eighties as chairman of the LLAIA and has always had a keen interest in the welfare of the Association.

In later years he enjoyed a number of trips to Grogarry Lodge on South Uist where he had considerable success with some rather good sea trout falling to his rod. He also kept the company amused in the evenings with his many Burns recitals, stories and limericks. He also enjoyed visiting Loch Hope with Matt for its sea trout.

Charlie was always keen to help out new arrivals in the bay and has been known to put in a good word with Sandy MacFarlane when members have been trying to find moorings. He was always looking in other anglers fly boxes for inspiration when in fact his own box held lots of lovely sparsely dressed example.

His boat was a labour of love for him and was instantly recognisable – he used recycled oak to give it a superb finish.

He was ever present at the end of season last Saturday Balmaha gathering on Loch Lomond and was missed due to illness at the 2014 gathering. The portrait was taken at the 2013 gathering on Inchlonaig.

Our sympathies lie with his wife Sheila and daughter Gillian at this very sad time – You will always be remembered Charlie.

Lomond System News – 30.10.2014

October 30th, 2014

River Leven.

No shortage of water over the last couple of weeks and plenty anglers out enjoying some late season sport…at last. There have been stories of big fish lost, one at Linnbrane estimated to be 30lb and at least two in the 25lb class, one of which straightened treble hooks, so it’s not surprising that the banks have been busy.

20141025_134405

A lot of coloured fish in the system, like this (9lb) cock landed and returned at the Piles by young John Smith recently, only as you would expect at this time of the season, but still some fresh fish coming through. Other catches include: Alex McIlwee (6lb) and (18lb+). Paul Kelly (5lb) (6lb) and (8lb) all returned of course. Jim Fleming (9lb) today at the Piles on the fly.

Would all members and ticket holders please note that spinning is not allowed at the Bonhill Pool and it is strictly ‘Fly Only’. There seems to have been some misunderstanding a few years ago to the effect that spinning was permitted on closing day. This is certainly not the case.

Loch Lomond.

Only really the dedicated band of fly fishers still active. Still some nice, fresh sea trout about with the north side of Lonaig well worth a drift.

Craig Carr from the University of Glasgow Angling Club sent this report:

Roger Parton 19-10-14

‘Our University of Glasgow Angling club President Roger Parton was out on Loch Lomond recently & caught a lovely 6.5lb Seat trout off Inch Loniag (3/10/14 sorry no picture) & he was out again last weekend where he connected with another fine Sea trout of 6lb off Long point in a flat calm (see picture 18/10/14) also caught were some smaller sea trout as well as losing a much bigger fish on that outing. All fish safely returned to be caught next year!!!’

Thanks for that Craig. More reports are available on the Balmaha Anglers Website

Rivers Endick and Fruin.

Members waited a long time for conditions to improve on these spate rivers….. and so did the fish. Plenty now running both waters and some good catches reported.

Jamie Strachan reports:

photo(2)

‘Finally managed a nice wee cock fish out the river on Saturday the 18th, first on the fly for me and first off the Endrick so I’m pretty well chuffed with myself’

Well done Jamie!

Malcolm MacCormick Reports:

20141028_133812(1)

‘On Saturday had a salmon of (6lb) on  the Endrick. Yesterday (29th) had five salmon, (12lb)(9lb)(6lb) and two at (4lb). The biggest was a cock fish of 32.5 inches caught below Fintry’ ‘Ben Marshall had one on Monday and hooked six yesterday, he only landed one though, about (10lb) from Coolies.’

Andrew McIntee sent this report:

‘Hi. I thought I would let you know of the good days fishing on the Endrick on Saturday 25th October.  Fishing from Netherton down stream due to very strong winds I entered Coolies pool and got a knock from a fish on the swing and then slightly further down raised a good fish but no contact just before the burn. I then crossed the burn and fishing the fly round bang, into a fish of 9lb which was returned safely (had unusual bite marks on one side I though might have been a otter?). About an hour later I had two grilse one after the other of 2.5lb and 3.5lb in the round pool both returned safely. By this time the wind was really getting worse and was howling upstream I felt it was time to give up about 3.30pm.’

Thanks for your report Andrew, sounds like a day worth waiting for.

The Fruin has also been producing some nice fish and fresh grilse as Malcolm MacCormick reports:

20141030_131029

‘Out today again, but nothing on the Endrick so went over to the Fruin. Had a fish about (4lb) and then a second (3.5lb) a fairly fresh hen’

Donald Cameron’s Report:

‘Had first fish from the Fruin, a (5lb) grilse and a (2lb) sea trout on Friday 17th. Sorry, no photos. Too busy thinking about returning fish.’

Thanks for your report Donald.

So plenty of fish in the system, pity it hadn’t been a month or two earlier, but that’s fishing. Always next season!

We’d like to remind members that catch returns can be made online via this website and should be submitted as soon as possible please.
